Spain reduces wine exports to Latin America and the Caribbean by 11%

In a concerning turn for the Spanish wine industry, wine exports to Latin America and the Caribbean have decreased by 11% in the first nine months of 2023. This decline follows a period of robust growth and record levels in previous years. The drop affects both the volume and value of exports, representing a significant challenge for Spanish producers and exporters. Despite this overall setback, there are notable variations among different markets. Mexico remains the main destination for Spanish wine in the region, closely followed by Brazil, which has overtaken the Dominican Republic in volume and value. Exports to Cuba have also experienced growth. Among the types of wine, still bottled wine remains the most in demand, followed by sparkling wines. However, wines with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) have suffered the greatest losses. This shift in export trends is prompting Spanish producers to reconsider their market strategies and explore new opportunities in other countries and regions. The situation also reflects the dynamic nature of global wine trade, where changes in consumer preferences, economic conditions, and international competition can have a rapid and significant impact on export patterns.
